A save the date needs four things: both your names, the wedding date, the town or city, and a line saying a formal invitation will follow. That is the whole job. Below are 30 save the date wording examples you can copy for a printed card, an email or a WhatsApp message, plus the rules for who should get one.

The short version: names, date with the weekday, city, "invitation to follow". No RSVP, no dress code, no registry. Send it 6 to 8 months before the wedding (9 to 12 for a destination wedding), and only to people you will definitely invite.

What Should a Save the Date Say?

A save the date is a short early notice that asks guests to keep one day free for your wedding. It is not the invitation, and it does not ask for an answer. It only has to reach someone's calendar before a work trip, a school event or another wedding does.

So the wording stays short. Here is what goes on it, and what waits for the invitation:

Put it on the save the dateKeep it for the invitation
Your names (first names are fine)Ceremony and reception times
The date, with the weekdayVenue address and directions
City or regionRSVP deadline and how to reply
"Formal invitation to follow"Dress code
Wedding website link (optional)Registry or gift details
Who is invited, if it could be unclearMeal choices

Two small details matter more than the font.

Write the weekday next to the date. "Saturday 12 June 2027" catches mistakes that "12/06/27" hides. If you have guests in the US and in Europe, a numbers-only date gets read as two different days: 12/06 is June 12 in London and December 6 in Chicago.

Name the people who are invited when it could be unclear. A save the date addressed to "the Silva family" tells the Silvas that their three teenagers are coming. If that is not your plan, you have started a hard conversation eight months early. Put the names on the envelope or at the top of the message.

Classic and Formal Save the Date Wording

Formal wording uses full names, no contractions and the date written out. It fits a printed card that will match a formal invitation later.

Save the Date Messages for WhatsApp and Text

A message needs different wording from a card. On a phone, the first line is what shows in the notification and the chat list, so put the names and the date there, not "Hi everyone". Send the photo and the text as one message, with the text as the photo's caption, so the date never gets separated from the picture when someone forwards it.

Example 15: Personal, for family

Hi Aunt Ruth, Ana and I are getting married on Saturday 12 June 2027 in Porto. Please keep the date free for us. The proper invitation comes in the spring.

Example 16: For friends

No need to reply yet. The invitation will have all the details and a link to RSVP.

Example 18: Photo caption only

Example 19: For guests who travel

Hi Kemi and Tunde, we're getting married on Saturday 9 October 2027 in Edinburgh. We're telling travelling guests first so you can look at flights early. Hotel tips coming soon on our website: [link]

Example 20: Reply to people who answer straight away

Thank you, we're so happy you'll try to make it. You don't need to confirm anything yet. The invitation with the RSVP link comes in March.

That last one matters more than it looks. People reply to save the dates, and a "yes" in a chat thread in October is not an RSVP. Thank them, then let the invitation collect the real answer. Our guide to sending a digital invitation on WhatsApp covers the invitation stage in detail.

Wording for Destination and Travel-Heavy Weddings

When guests need flights, a hotel and days off work, the save the date has to do more. Add the length of the trip and say where travel details will appear.

Wording for Special Situations

Example 24: Weekday wedding

Midweek weddings are no longer unusual. Bridebook's UK Wedding Report 2026, based on more than 7,000 couples, found the highest share of Wednesday and Thursday weddings it has ever recorded outside the pandemic, with Saturday down to 47%. If yours is on a weekday, say so loudly, because guests assume Saturday.

How to Send a Save the Date on WhatsApp

Most save the dates now go out as a message, at least to part of the list. This is the order that avoids the common mistakes:

  1. Lock the guest list first. Every person who receives a save the date must also receive an invitation. Finish the list before you send a single message.
  2. Write the list as households, not people. One line per household, with the name of everyone included. This becomes your invitation list later.
  3. Send the photo with the text as its caption. One message, one bubble. Sent separately, the picture gets forwarded without the date.
  4. Send one by one or with a broadcast list, never in a group. A group shows every guest's number to everyone, and the replies bury the date. A WhatsApp broadcast list reaches up to 256 contacts, and each person sees the message as a private chat. It only reaches people who have saved your number, so older relatives and new contacts may need a personal message.
  5. Pick a normal hour. A weekday evening reads as personal. Sunday at 7 a.m. reads as a mass mailing.
  6. Tick off each household as it is delivered. Anyone without a tick after a week gets a phone call or a card.

Who Should Get a Save the Date?

A save the date is a promise. Anyone who gets one must get an invitation, and you cannot take it back later without hurting someone. That makes the list harder than the wording.

A test that works: only send save the dates to people you would still invite if your venue suddenly lost a third of its seats. Everyone else waits for the invitation stage, when your numbers are final.

The "maybe" names cost real money. The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study, which surveyed 10,474 couples, puts the average US wedding at 117 guests and $292 per guest. Each save the date is a commitment of roughly that amount. Before you send, run your list through the wedding guest list calculator to see what it does to the budget.

If someone gets a plus-one, show it now: write "Ana and guest", or better, the partner's name. Deciding plus-ones after the save the dates have gone out is how couples end up with 14 extra seats. Our wedding plus-one etiquette guide has the full decision framework.

From Save the Date to RSVP: Keep One List

The household list you build for save the dates is the same list you will need for invitations, RSVPs, meal choices and the seating plan. Couples who keep it in one place never have to merge three spreadsheets and a chat history in the spring.

When the invitation stage comes, create your wedding page on Invyt and send the link the same way you sent the save the date: by WhatsApp, email, or a QR code on a printed card. Guests reply on the page, you see every yes, no and plus-one in one dashboard, and your save the date list tells you exactly who is still missing. For the follow-up message itself, borrow from our wedding RSVP wording examples.

Invyt is free to start, and the guest list and RSVP tracking are included in the free plan. Set up your wedding at invyt.app whenever you are ready to turn save the dates into answers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need save the dates for a small wedding?

Not always. For a local wedding with fewer than about 50 guests, many couples skip them and send the invitation a little earlier, 8 to 10 weeks ahead. Send save the dates anyway if guests need to travel, if the wedding falls on a holiday weekend, or if it is more than six months away.

Can you send save the dates before booking the venue?

Yes, if the date and the city are fixed. Guests plan around the day and the travel, not the building, so a city or region is enough. Never send one before the date is confirmed in writing. Changing the date later means contacting every guest a second time.

Do save the dates have to match the wedding invitations?

No. Many couples send a digital save the date and a printed invitation, or the other way round. Using the same names, colours or photo helps guests connect the two, but it is a nice touch, not a rule. The thing that must match is the guest list.

Should parents and the wedding party get a save the date?

Yes. They already know the date, but sending them one costs nothing and keeps your list complete. It also means nobody close to you hears about the date second-hand. Count them in your numbers so the invitation round later has no gaps.

Can guests RSVP to a save the date?

Not formally. A save the date asks no question, so a reply like 'we'll be there' is a good sign, not a confirmation. Thank them, note it on your list, and still send the invitation with a proper RSVP deadline. A lot can change in eight months.
