When should RSVPs be due?

For most local weddings and events, set your RSVP deadline about 3–4 weeks before the date. That gives you a week or two to chase late replies before your caterer or venue needs a final headcount.

For destination weddings, ask for responses 6–8 weeks ahead. Guests need extra lead time to book flights and accommodation, so an earlier deadline keeps everyone organized.

The reliable way to set the date is to work backward from your caterer's final-count deadline. Take that date, add a buffer week or two to follow up with non-responders, and that buffer date becomes your RSVP deadline.

When to mail your invitations

Mail invitations 6–8 weeks before a local event. That window gives guests enough time to check their calendars and respond comfortably before your deadline.

For a destination wedding, send invitations around 12 weeks out, and send save-the-dates even earlier — ideally 6–9 months ahead — so guests can plan travel and book time off.

What to do about late or no RSVPs

Build a buffer week into your timeline on purpose. Setting the deadline 3–4 weeks out means a few stragglers won't put your final headcount at risk.

Once the deadline passes, follow up directly — a quick phone call or message works far better than another mass email. Reach out to non-responders individually and confirm before your caterer's final-count date arrives.
