Good Christmas party invitation wording does three jobs in a few lines. It says when and where, it says what kind of party this is (cozy dinner, ugly sweater night, Secret Santa swap), and it asks for an answer by a date you can actually plan around. Get those three right and everything else is tone.

Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday, so the prime party nights are Friday, December 11, Saturday, December 12, Friday, December 18 and Saturday, December 19. Those four nights will be fought over. Send your invitation before Thanksgiving (November 26). The week after it, every December Saturday gets claimed, and an invitation that lands on December 1 competes with three others.

Below are 40 Christmas party invitation messages to copy, grouped by situation, plus a send-date table for 2026.

Short version: pick a message, paste it above a free online invitation with RSVP tracking, and ask for replies about ten days before the party.

What to Write on a Christmas Party Invitation

A Christmas party invitation is a short message that tells guests the date, place and style of a festive gathering and asks them to confirm by a set date. In December it also has to cover the extras that other parties don't have: a gift exchange, a dress code, a crowded calendar.

These are the lines it needs:

What to includeExample line
Host, date and timeChristmas party at Dani and Leo's, Saturday, Dec 12, 7pm
Address and parking41 Alder Street. Street parking after 6
What kind of partyCozy, casual, ugly sweaters strongly encouraged
Food and drinksWe've got mulled wine and a big pot of chili
Gift exchange rulesWhite elephant, one wrapped gift, $25 max
Plus-ones and kidsPartners welcome, kids are with the sitter this time
Reply-by dateLet us know by Dec 2 so we cook enough

Here's the fill-in version:

Christmas party at [host]'s on [day, date] at [time]. [Address]. [Style or dress code]. We'll have [food/drinks]. [Gift exchange line]. [Plus-one line]. RSVP by [date] here: [link]

One habit changes how many people actually answer. Give the reply-by date a reason. "RSVP by December 2" gets ignored by half the list. "RSVP by December 2 so I know how much food to make" gets answers, because now the deadline protects their dinner too.

Casual Christmas Party Invitations for the Group Chat

Most Christmas parties among friends start in a group chat, so most invitations are a text. Put everything in one message. Anything you send as a second message, half the group won't scroll up to find.

If you're sending it on WhatsApp, our guide to sending digital invitations via WhatsApp covers how to share one link with a group without it getting buried under GIFs.

1. The classic

Christmas party at ours! Saturday, December 12, from 7pm. Mulled wine, too many snacks, everyone we like. Tap yes or no here by the 2nd: [link]

2. The one-liner

Lights up, playlist ready, you're invited. Sat Dec 19, 7pm, my place. RSVP: [link]

3. The first-time host

I'm hosting my first ever Christmas party and I need a crowd. Friday, December 11, 7:30pm. I'll handle food and drinks, you handle the vibes. Please reply on the link by the 1st so I don't bake 60 cupcakes for six people.

4. The low-key night in

Low-key Christmas night: Saturday the 19th, 6pm. Soup, board games, a movie nobody will finish. Pajamas allowed. Let me know if you're in: [link]

5. The annual tradition

Year six of the Christmas party. Same apartment, same wobbly tree, Saturday, December 12 at 7. Priya is on cocktails again by popular demand. RSVP by December 2.

6. The neighbors' open house

Our door's open on Sunday, December 13, from 2 to 6pm. Come by for cider and cookies, stay as long as you like, bring the kids. A quick yes on the link helps us guess how many cookies to bake: [link]

Funny Christmas Party Invitation Wording

Funny works best when the joke is about something real: the cooking, the chaos, the calendar. Keep the logistics plain so nobody misses them under the punchline.

7. The honest one

You're invited to a Christmas party where the tree is slightly crooked and the host is slightly stressed. Saturday, December 19, 7pm. Snacks plentiful, judgment minimal. RSVP by the 9th.

8. The calendar war

I know you have four parties that weekend. Ours has a fondue fountain. Friday, December 18, 7pm. Choose wisely: [link]

9. The naughty-or-nice list

Santa checks his list twice. I only check mine once, so please RSVP on the first try. Christmas party, Saturday, December 12, 7pm. Reply by December 2.

10. The carb warning

This Christmas party is a carb-forward event. Lasagna, garlic bread and three kinds of cookies. Saturday the 12th, 6:30pm. Wear stretchy pants and reply by the 2nd.

11. The reluctant elf

My partner has made me host a Christmas party. Please come so this was worth it. Saturday, December 19, from 7pm. Elf hats will be provided whether you like it or not. RSVP: [link]

Christmas Dinner and Christmas Eve Invitations

Family invitations carry more weight and fewer jokes. Name the meal, the time people should arrive versus the time you'll sit down, and anything people are expected to bring, so Aunt Carol doesn't turn up with a third green bean casserole.

For older relatives who don't live on their phones, a printed card still lands well. Add a QR code that opens the RSVP page so their answer still ends up on the same list as everyone else's.

12. Christmas dinner with family

We'd love to have you for Christmas dinner on Friday, December 25. Arrive from 2pm, we'll sit down at 3. We're making the turkey and sides, so just bring yourselves. Please let us know by December 14 how many of you are coming.

13. Christmas Eve

Join us on Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24, from 6pm. Dinner, carols if Grandpa insists, and presents for the kids before bed. Please reply by the 14th so we can set the right number of places.

14. The formal dinner party

You are warmly invited to a Christmas dinner at the home of Elena and Marco Russo on Saturday, December 19, at 7:30 in the evening. Cocktail attire. Kindly reply by December 9.

15. Christmas for friends far from home

Not flying home this year? Neither are we. Christmas Day lunch at our place, 1pm on the 25th. We'll do the roast, you bring a side or a bottle. There's room for eight, so let me know by the 15th.

16. Christmas brunch

Christmas morning brunch, Friday, December 25, 10am. Cinnamon rolls, eggs, coffee, and pajamas are the dress code. Presents can wait an hour. Tell us who's coming by December 18.

Secret Santa and White Elephant Invitation Wording

A gift exchange needs more words than any other part of a Christmas invitation, because the rules decide whether it's fun or awkward. The two common formats differ in one big way.

Secret SantaWhite elephant
Who buys for whomEach person buys for one assigned personEveryone brings one anonymous gift
When names are drawnBefore the party, 2 to 3 weeks outNo draw, numbers picked at the party
What the invite must sayBudget, draw date, how names are sentBudget, gift type (funny or useful), stealing rules
Best forClose friends, small teamsBig groups, mixed groups, office parties

Here's the part most hosts get backwards. Draw Secret Santa names after RSVPs close, not before. If you draw first and someone drops out, a guest ends up with no gift. Your final yes list is your draw list. Invyt won't draw names for you, but a paper-slip draw or any free name-picker app takes five minutes once you know who's coming.

17. Secret Santa announcement

Christmas party plus Secret Santa. Saturday, December 12, 7pm. Budget is $25. RSVP by November 25, and I'll send everyone their person on the 27th, so you have two weeks to shop.

18. Secret Santa for the team

Team Secret Santa is back. Sign up by Friday, November 20, and you'll get your name the following Monday. Budget is $20. Gifts get opened at the party on December 11. Opting out is completely fine, just don't sign up.

19. White elephant

White elephant at our Christmas party. Bring one wrapped gift around $25, something you'd actually want or something gloriously useless. We'll pick numbers at 8. Saturday, December 19, from 7pm. RSVP: [link]

20. White elephant rules in one line

House rules: a gift can be stolen twice, the third owner keeps it, and the last person can steal anything. Bring one wrapped gift, $20 max.

21. Regift exchange

This year's exchange is regifts only. Bring the candle you never lit, the mug you never used, wrapped and with a straight face. Saturday, December 12, 7pm.

22. Cookie swap

Cookie swap and Christmas drinks, Sunday, December 13, 3pm. Bake one dozen of one kind, bring a container to take a mix home. Tell us what you're baking when you RSVP so we don't get five batches of gingerbread.

Ugly Sweater Party Invitation Wording

National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day lands on the third Friday of December, which is Friday, December 18 in 2026. That's a ready-made date and a ready-made theme. The invitation's job is to make the dress code feel like a dare, not a requirement.

23. The classic dare

Ugly Christmas Sweater Party, Friday, December 18, 7pm. The worse the sweater, the better the welcome. Prize for the ugliest. RSVP by the 9th: [link]

24. The prize categories

Ugly sweater night. Prizes for: most lights, most handmade, best pun, and "how is that legal." Saturday, December 19, 7pm. No sweater, no judgment, but also no prize.

25. The DIY station

Don't own an ugly sweater? Bring a plain one. We'll have a glue gun, tinsel and pom-poms at the door. Friday, December 18, from 7pm. RSVP: [link]

26. The office version

Ugly sweater Friday, December 18. Wear your worst to the office party at 4pm, vote for the winner at 5. Festive socks count for anyone who'd rather not.

Office Christmas Party Invitations

An office invitation has a wider audience than a party at home. About 9 in 10 American adults celebrate Christmas, according to a 2017 Pew Research Center survey, which also means about 1 in 10 of your coworkers might not. "Holiday party" or "end-of-year party" covers everyone at no cost.

Office parties are still very much a thing: Challenger, Gray & Christmas found that 64% of companies planned a holiday celebration in 2024. If you're organizing the whole event, not just the message, our company holiday party planning checklist covers venue, budget per head and check-in. For a bigger team, a corporate event RSVP page keeps the headcount, plus-ones and dietary needs in one list for the caterer.

27. The inclusive team invitation

You're invited to our end-of-year party on Thursday, December 10, from 5 to 8pm at The Grain Room. Food, drinks (with plenty of alcohol-free options) and a short thank-you from the founders. Please RSVP by November 30 so we can confirm numbers with the venue.

28. The formal company invitation

Harbor & Pine invites you to our annual holiday celebration on Friday, December 11, at 7pm, at the Riverside Hotel ballroom. Dinner and dancing. Partners are welcome. Kindly respond by November 27 and note any dietary requirements.

29. The lunchtime party

Holiday lunch for the whole team on Wednesday, December 16, 12:30 to 2:30. We're taking over the back room at Sol y Luna. Calendar blocked, laptops closed. Tell us by December 7 if you're coming and if you need a vegetarian or halal meal.

30. The remote team

Virtual holiday party, Thursday, December 17, at 4pm ET. We're sending everyone a snack box, so please RSVP by December 4 with a delivery address. Cameras optional, festive mugs encouraged.

Plus-One, Kids, Dietary and Potluck Wording

These lines prevent the most December awkwardness, so don't leave them implied. Pick the one that fits and add it to whichever message you chose above.

31. Plus-ones

Partners are very welcome. If you'd like to bring someone else, just ask first, we're squeezed for space this year.

32. Kids

This one's adults only, so book the sitter. Kids are very welcome at our Christmas open house on the 13th.

33. Dietary needs

Tell us about any allergies or dietary needs when you RSVP. We'll make sure there's a full plate for everyone, not just the salad.

34. Potluck

We're doing the main, you bring a side, a dessert or a drink. Add what you're bringing when you reply, so we don't end up with four trays of brownies.

Collecting all of this by text means scrolling back through a thread to rebuild a list. An RSVP page that asks for headcount, plus-ones and dietary notes in the reply does that counting for you.

When to Send Christmas Party Invitations in 2026

December is the one month where the invitation date matters as much as the wording. Here's a send schedule built on the 2026 calendar. If you're also hosting a Friendsgiving on November 21 or 22, our Friendsgiving invitation wording guide has its own timeline, and both invites can go out the same week.

PartySend the invitationAsk for replies bySend a reminder
Office party, Fri Dec 11Nov 2 to 13Nov 30Nov 23
Friends' party, Sat Dec 12Nov 9 to 16Dec 2Nov 30
Ugly sweater party, Fri Dec 18Nov 16 to 20Dec 9Dec 6
Christmas Eve or Day dinnerby Dec 4Dec 14Dec 10

Notice the office reminder lands the Monday of Thanksgiving week. Once the long weekend starts, nobody reads work messages until the following Monday.

Then send one reminder to the people who haven't answered. Not the whole group, just the silent ones. Invyt shows who's still pending and opens WhatsApp with the reminder already written, so the nudge still comes from you.

35. The gentle reminder

Quick nudge about the Christmas party on Saturday the 12th. Still hoping you can make it. Could you tap yes or no by Wednesday? [link]

36. The final headcount

Last call for our Christmas party RSVPs. I'm ordering food tomorrow, so if you haven't answered, I'll count you as a no. No hard feelings either way.

37. The day before

See you tomorrow from 7. Address and parking are on the invite, which opens straight in maps. Bring your wrapped gift for the white elephant.

Thank-You Messages After the Christmas Party

Send it the next day, while the playlist is still stuck in everyone's head. It's also your chance to return the scarf someone left on the coat pile.

38. Short and warm

Thank you all for last night. Twenty people, one fondue fountain, zero broken ornaments. Same time next year?

39. Specific thanks

Thanks for coming and for bringing so much food. Jonah, your gingerbread disappeared in ten minutes. Whoever left a grey scarf, it's safe with me.

40. The sentimental one

Last night was exactly what this year needed. Thank you for making the trip in the cold. The photos are in the shared album, so add yours.

Pick a message, swap in your date, and send it with a link that collects the answers for you. Invyt is free for up to 25 guests per event, which covers most Christmas parties at home, and a one-time upgrade covers anything bigger. You can create your Christmas party invitation in about five minutes, before everyone's December fills up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should an invitation say Christmas party or holiday party?

Use the name that matches the party. A gathering of friends who all celebrate can say Christmas party. A workplace, a club or a mixed group is safer with holiday party or end-of-year party, because it invites everyone without asking anyone to celebrate something they don't. The decorations can still be as Christmassy as you like.

What is a good Secret Santa budget?

Most groups land between $20 and $30 for friends and between $15 and $25 for coworkers. Pick one number, not a range, because a range gets read as its top end. For a team with very different salaries, go lower and let creativity carry it. Put the number in the invitation so nobody has to ask.

Is it okay to invite only some coworkers to a Christmas party?

At your home, yes, but keep it out of work channels. Send invitations privately, don't discuss the party in the office or the team chat, and don't hand out invites at desks. If the guest list is your whole immediate team except one or two people, invite those people too, since a near-complete list reads as exclusion.

Do you have to RSVP to a Christmas party?

Yes, whenever the invitation asks for it, and ideally within a few days. December hosts are buying food, booking tables and counting chairs for a specific number. If you're unsure, say no rather than maybe. If your plans change after saying yes, tell the host as early as you can, not on the day.

Can you hold a Christmas party in January?

Yes, and it's often easier. Venues are cheaper, guests are less booked and nobody is choosing between four parties on one Saturday. Call it a post-holiday party, a winter party or a twelfth-night party and hold it in the first two weeks of January, while the lights are still up and the mood still feels festive.
